William Nystrom is a dedicated athlete, competing despite an ongoing battle with Multiple Sclerosis. This illness creates symptoms including tingling and numbness, muscle weakness, slurred speech, blurred vision, breathing difficulties, paralysis, and worse.
Diagnosed about 14 years ago, Nystrom fought back, and by 2002 was again running 5Ks, 10Ks, half-marathons, and even triathlons. "My neurologist could not believe it," says Nystrom.
He credits his lifestyle of good nutrition, training, and racing with slowing the progression of his MS symptoms. Nystrom is also active in pushing to widen the qualifications for the physically challenged, as some racing organizations--including the Challenged Athletes Foundation and the Paraolympics--only recognize athletes who have lost limbs.
Nystrom dreams of qualifying for Ironman Hawaii, but in the meantime is working on the petition process to get MS accepted into the physically challenged division. "I'd like to hit the starting line with a chance."
