5 Everyday Ways to Help the Earth
Make your house green in 2017 with these 5 easy tips to reduce waste in your home and community:
-
Reusable Water Bottles:
Did you know that plastic water bottles are one of the most prevalent items in landfills? Using a reusable water bottle is not only convenient but better for you and the planet too! Investing in a reusable water bottle will save you money in the long term by not buying disposable plastic water bottles. Also, when you carry a reusable water bottle around, you are more likely to keep hydrated with the recommended 2 liters of water per day! -
Reusable Bags:
Reusable produce bags allow you to pack your product, scan it at the register, wash it, and store it in your fridge to be ready for the week. If the produce bags get dirty, just toss them in the washer and let them air dry. Reusable grocery bags are sturdier and tend to fit more groceries in them! You'll eliminate the need for plastic bags that tend to end up in landfills. -
Glass Containers:
Using glass food storage containers not only cuts down on the amount of food bags that you use, but also prevents contamination. Plus, you won't need to worry about any chemicals leaching into your food when microwaving. Recycled mason jars are the perfect air tight, easy to clean, glass food storage container. -
Bamboo Products:
Bamboo trees are very unique in that they can continue to grow after being cut. In fact, Bamboo grows 10 times faster than a regular tree, while requiring less water and no pesticide for growth. Products made out of Bamboo wood are durable, heat & odor resistant and very light-weight - making great kitchen gadgets and utensils! (Grow College of Agricultural & Life Sciences) -
Shopping Small & Local:
Local businesses support their community in more ways than one. Not only financially through the taxes and jobs they create, but they also lessen the impact on our environment as well. Supporting small businesses means cutting down on processing, packing, and transportation waste compared to other big stores.
What We're Doing
Erin Baker's is committed to reducing our food waste footprint in a sustainable way by donating all of our food waste to local pig farmers. You may be asking, "Where does the food waste come from?" At the Bakery we employ people, not machines, to make sure our food is fresh and delicious every time you take a bite. That being said, we aren't perfect and occasionally we have an oops! by adding too much of this or that, or a cookie is so exited to get packaged it flings itself towards the floor. While these things do happen, we are lucky to be able to support our local farming community by donating more than 1,700 lbs of food per month for them to feed their livestock.
